Ealdham Primary School

Governors make a considerable investment of their time and in the school. As a result, they know the school well and use their good range of skills to fully support their roles and responsibilities.         Ofsted

Message from the Chair of Governors.

On behalf of all the school governors I am delighted to welcome you to governors section of the Ealdham school website. I hope this will continue to keep you up to date with the governing body.

As before, this will give you the opportunity to meet the staff, look at the pictures of our children taking part and enjoying our vibrant curriculum and catch up with the latest events on our newsletters – all from the comfort of your armchair!

In 2021 Ofsted again confirmed that Ealdham is a good school offering a good education to all your children and it continues to do so. I'm sure that is your experience too.

We are all immensely proud of the work done by the school and salute the hard work of all the staff who between them have contributed to the successes of the school. The Governing Body recognises this hard work and continues to actively monitor progress to ensure that the school maintains the highest standards for you and your children.

The governors are very keen to work together with the wider school community and to encourage parents and carers to play a key part in our discussions and decision making.

Finally I would like to say how pleased and proud I am to be your chair of governors and on behalf of the governing body I look forward to working with you and the school to ensure that your children make the very best of the opportunities that Ealdham Primary and Nursery School provide.

Types of School Governor

Parent governors

Parents, including carers, of pupils are eligible to stand for election as governors. Parent governors are elected by other parents at the school. If insufficient parents stand for election, the governing body may appoint parents.

Staff governors

The headteacher is a staff governor by virtue of their office. Other staff, both teaching and support, may become governors as long as they are paid (volunteers do not qualify). Staff governors are elected by the school staff. Any election that is contested must be held by ballot.

Authority governors

LAs are encouraged to appoint high-calibre governors to schools that need the most support and to appoint candidates irrespective of any political affiliation or preference. Authorities may appoint minor authority representatives, e.g. district and parish councillors, as authority governors.

Co-opted governors

Co-opted governors are appointed by the governing body to represent community interests. They can be individuals who

  • live or work in the community served by the school
  • are committed to the good governance and success of the school even though they do not work or live close to it.

The definition of co-opted governor is wide. People from a business or professional background and minor authority representatives can be appointed as community governors.

Foundation and partnership governors

Foundation governors are appointed by the school's founding body, church or other organisation named in the school's instrument of government. If the school has a religious character, the foundation governors must preserve and develop this. They must also ensure compliance with the trust deed, if there is one. If a foundation school has no foundation or equivalent body, the foundation governors are replaced by partnership governors appointed by the governing body after a nomination process.

Sponsor governors

Sponsor governors are appointed by the governing body. They may be individuals who

  • give substantial assistance to the school, financially or in kind
  • provide services to the school.

If the governing body wants to appoint sponsor governors it must seek nominations from the sponsor(s). The governing body can appoint a maximum of two persons as sponsor governors.

Financial Benchmarking

Under current legislation, maintained schools are required to publish on their website a link to the specific page on the Schools Financial Benchmarking website dedicated to their school. Here is a link to the page for Ealdham Primary School:

Finance

Maintained schools are funded by a grant from the Department for Education (the Dedicated Schools Grant). Local Authorities are the accountable body for maintained schools and, in line with national frameworks and guidance set by the Department, monitor and intervene in these schools to reduce the risk of financial failure or misuse of funds.

Each local authority has a scheme for financing schools which sets out the financial relationship between it and its maintained schools, and the Department publishes guidance setting out what is required or permitted in schemes.

New financial transparency arrangements have been adapted and implemented across the maintained school sector, in order to improve the transparency of maintained schools.

Under the new arrangements schools must publish how many school employees have a gross annual salary of £100,000 or more. Ealdham Primary School has one employee in this salary bracket
